Japanese Paintings

Scrolls and Framed Works from the Edo, Meiji and Taishō Periods

Japanese paintings encompass one of the world’s richest and most diverse artistic traditions, spanning more than a millennium of continuous development. From the expressive monochrome ink paintings of Zen monks to the refined naturalism of later Nihonga masters, Japanese artists cultivated a distinctive visual language distinguished by technical refinement, poetic restraint, and a profound sensitivity to nature, atmosphere, and the changing seasons.

The collection presented here comprises hanging scrolls and framed paintings dating from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century, selected for their artistic quality, historical significance, and state of preservation. For more than twenty-five years I have specialised in Japanese paintings of this period, carefully sourcing works in Japan that exemplify the highest standards of artistic quality and preservation. Each work is accompanied by original research and a detailed catalogue essay, providing collectors with the context necessary to appreciate both each work’s artistic significance and its historical place.
