Kristan Hauge
Established in Kyoto in 1999, I am an art dealer specializing in Japanese painting, with a particular focus on folding screens and works on paper from the medieval period through to the early 20th century. My gallery is located in Kyoto’s museum district, a short walk from the Hosomi Museum, placing me at the centre of one of the most active environments for the study and appreciation of Japanese art.
Being permanently based in Japan affords me exceptional access to works at their source, as well as the opportunity to engage closely with leading scholars, collectors, and restorers on a regular basis. Over time, I have developed a particular depth of experience in the field of Japanese screens, an area that remains central to my practice. I am drawn to works that combine technical refinement with atmosphere, character, and a strong visual presence. From the controlled dynamism of ink painting to the heightened naturalism of later Nihonga, I seek out pieces with clarity, character, and enduring visual presence.
My gallery is a purpose-built space dedicated to the research, preservation, and display of Japanese art. Within this setting, I work closely with collectors, designers, and institutions, offering carefully selected works alongside considered guidance. My approach is personal and long-term.
